Our Back to Basics Navigation Course is perfect for beginners who want to build confidence exploring the outdoors. Whether you’re completely new to navigation or simply looking to refresh your map reading skills, this course will guide you step by step through the essentials.
What You’ll Learn
During the course, you’ll develop key outdoor navigation skills, including how to:
Read and interpret maps with confidence
Navigate using both a traditional map & compass and modern navigation apps
Plan safe and enjoyable walks, including what kit to take with you
Know what to do in case of an emergency outdoors
By the end of the day, you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to plan your own walks and explore the countryside independently.
Open to participants aged 18 and over, or 16+ if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Navigation Course in Cannock Chase
This navigation course takes place in Cannock Chase, Staffordshire, a beautiful Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a fantastic setting to learn essential outdoor skills. The route covers around 10km, but the pace is relaxed, with the focus on learning navigation techniques rather than testing your fitness.
We recommend participants have a moderate level of fitness and feel comfortable walking for up to 5 hours in mixed terrain. This way, you can concentrate on developing your navigation skills while enjoying the surroundings.

Your instructor is Matt Cooper, founder of TMC. Matt is a qualified Mountaineering Instructor, Mountain Leader (Summer & Winter), and a member of a Mountain Rescue team in Snowdonia. With years of experience teaching navigation at every level—from complete beginners to military personnel and trainee instructors—Matt brings expert knowledge and a passion for helping people feel confident in the outdoors.
