  • Duration: 3 Days (approx.)
  • Location: Betws y Coed, Conwy

This two-day workshop is designed for anyone considering the MCI award (previously known as the MIA) and wanting a deeper understanding of both the qualification process and the responsibilities of a Mountaineering Instructor. Through a mix of practical sessions, group discussion, and real-world application, the course provides insight into the skills, judgement, and approach needed to work confidently in mountainous environments.

Over the two days, we’ll explore the combination of technical competence, decision-making, and leadership required for multi-pitch climbing and roped scrambling. Participants will build their understanding of movement skills, managing risk, leading groups in challenging terrain, and adapting to the dynamic nature of mountain environments while operating safely and professionally.

Course Content

Day 1 – Taking People Scrambling

Spend the day developing your understanding of how to lead groups safely and efficiently on roped scrambles in mountain terrain. The session explores route choice, movement management across complex and exposed ground, decision-making in changing mountain conditions, and the techniques used to manage groups effectively in adventurous environments.

Day 2 – Rock Climbing and Problem Avoidance

Personal climbing and professional instruction require very different approaches in the mountains. This session focuses on the systems, decision-making, and efficient working practices needed when leading clients in a professional setting. Throughout the day, we’ll explore how effective communication, strong stance management, and proactive planning can help prevent common issues before they arise. If time allows, the session will also cover strategies and considerations for descending safely and efficiently with clients.

This course is not a qualification course. The format may be changed to work around weather or client ability.
