Scrambling and Navigation Week | North Wales

Take your hill walking to the next level with our five-day Scrambling and Navigation Course—designed for walkers who want to enjoy the mountains with confidence, and safety. Whether you're new to navigating or looking to try out your first scrambles, this course offers a fun, supportive environment to grow your abilities and enjoy the mountains in a whole new way.

Led by experienced, fully qualified mountain professionals, you’ll learn essential navigation techniques, route planning, and safe scrambling on grade 1 terrain. Each day balances practical learning with hands-on experience, set in stunning mountain locations chosen to match the group’s goals and conditions.

We keep the atmosphere friendly, relaxed, and inclusive—no pressure, just great company, expert guidance, and plenty of laughs along the way. By the end of the week, you’ll have built the skills and confidence to tackle more adventurous routes and explore the mountains with a greater sense of freedom.

Course Content

Planning - Learn how to plan a walk using guidebooks or online sources and which metrological services offer the best forecasts

Equipment - We will show you what to carry in your pack, how layering systems work and what boots work best in the mountains.

Scrambling - Movement coaching, route reading and how to scramble with more confidence. 

Navigation - Learning how to navigate will ensure you can stay on track and navigate in poor weather. You will learn about map types, scale and features of the map before heading out for a scramble and some map and compass instruction. By the end of the week, you will be much more confident navigating around the mountains.

Emergencies - Learn about the kit you need to carry and what to do in an emergency. 

The first few days will normally be spent focusing on navigation fundamentals before we push on to scrambling later in the week. By the end of the course, you will have developed your navigation skills to a good level and gained confidence on rocky grade 1 scrambles.
